For the first time, regional and national construction contractors in the UK will gather for the Building Plymouth Supply Chain Roadshow that will take place this January in Devon and Cornwall. Its purpose is to drive a joined-up approach to help address the growing shortage of skills in the city’s construction sector.

The event is organised by the Plymouth City Council with the help of organisations, such as the Training Construction Groups of Plymouth, Cornwall and Devon, and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), as well as companies, such as Kier Construction, BAM Construction, Morgan Sindall, Midas and Willmott Dixon. It was launched after industry experts forecast an estimated number of 10,000 construction-related jobs needed over the next 10 years in the city.

According to Michael Chaney, who will be the key speaker at the event, “The current and future pipeline of projects looks so positive in Plymouth and the surrounding areas – as main contractors we are eager to engage with our local supply chain through these ‘meet the buyer’ forums and encourage as many construction employers to join us as possible – these four locations and choice of dates give great flexibility to engage with our innovative Building Plymouth partnership. Come along and find out how we can help your business recruit and grow the right skills.”

Also commenting on the purpose of the event, host Sam Lockyer from Midas said, “It is critical that we work together to address the skills gaps and skills shortages facing our local industry. We need more people to train and become qualified right across the trades, technical and professional roles. A push on driving up apprenticeship numbers in the city is key and as main contractors we want to pro-actively support our supply chain in up-skilling their workforce. This Roadshow aims to tackle how we address these importance issues through collaboration as we recognise that a strengthened supply chain will result in stability and sustainability for all.”

The Building Plymouth Supply Chain Roadshow will kick-start on January 18, 2017 at the Brickfields stadium. It will then move to Exeter on January 19, Liskeard on January 24 and finally to Torbay on January 25.
