Following a directive by President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, the Kenyan government issued mining equipment to small-scale miners operating in the Taita-Taveta County.
During his recent speech given at Voi Gem, the country’s Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu said that the equipment will be essential in speeding up mining operations in the area. Over the years, Taita-Taveta miners have not achieved maximum profitability because they do not have the right equipment to do so. Now, the government has addressed the issue by giving these miners bulldozers, tippers, wheel shovels, an oil tank, an air compressor, as well as plant operators.
With the new equipment, Kazungu said that the county will soon become a model area in mining. He stated:
“The President has realized the mining potential in this county, that is why he has directed that the NYS brings equipment here. Mining has the potential to drive the country’s economy.
“The government has established a gemstone cutting center at Voi worth more than Sh100 million. In two months, the center will be fully equipped. You will no longer be selling minerals to brokers because the government will provide the market at the center.”
Aside from the new mining equipment, Kazungu said that the government will also establish a technical mining institute to offer short courses to those interested in the field.
