A Prototype Wind Turbine in Denmark Sets a New World Record in Wind Power

Denmark has broken a benchmark in wind energy with its large prototype wind turbine that can generate around 216,000 kWh of power in 24 hours.

In late 2016, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind revealed the 9mW prototype, called the V164-8.0 MW. Basically, it is an enhanced version of the company’s 8mW model, allowing it to generate more power under favorable conditions. This new wind turbine, which stands at 722 feet off the coast of Østerild, has 38-ton blades with a total swept area that is bigger than the London Eye.

Commenting on this development, Torben Hvid Larsen, chief technology officer of the company behind the record-breaking turbine, said:

“We are confident that the 9 MW machine has now proven that it is ready for the market and we believe that our wind turbine will play an integral part in enabling the offshore industry to continue to drive down the cost of energy.”

Besides, a larger and more effective turbine does ultimately mean fewer turbines to be built in the future, lowering costs on everything. Of course, this will be passed on to the consumers, who will eventually enjoy cheaper energy bills.

So far, Denmark has continued to lead in the area of offshore wind power, with wind output exceeding national demand back in 2015.
